Grinding Media
Forged grinding media
Forged steel balls for high-impact and general grinding duties, from large SAG top-up sizes down to regrind.
Forged media is typically used where impact is high, such as SAG mills and primary ball mills with large top-up sizes. Size and hardness are set per application; a historical top-up size is a starting point, not proof that it is optimal.
Specification
Forged grinding media
Specifications are typical ranges. Size, chemistry and hardness are set for each application.
| Forged grinding media | |
|---|---|
| Size range | 25–150 mm (≈1–6 in) |
| Surface hardness | 57–65 HRC |
| Manufacturing route | Raw material → heating → cutting → forging → heat treatment → quality inspection → sorting → packaging |
| Typical applications | SAG mills, ball mills, stirred mills |
| Packaging | Bulk, bulk bag, drum |
| Performance factors | |
|---|---|
| Impact and breakage | Large balls in SAG mills see heavy impact. Toughness has to be matched to that duty, and breakage is diagnosed by root cause, not assumed to be a quality defect. |
| Wear | Abrasive and corrosive wear depend on ore, water chemistry and mill conditions, so wear rate is measured on site. |
| Grinding duty | Ball size distribution affects breakage of coarse particles versus fines. |
Customisation
Size, material design, hardness and manufacturing parameters may be optimised within technically validated and manufacturable ranges. The aim is the right balance of wear resistance, hardness and toughness for the duty, not the hardest or most alloyed ball.
Packaging and supply
Regular communication with site and maintained stock levels reduce the risk of shipping delays reaching the mill.
Quality
The manufacturer is accredited to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Every batch is tested against Auday's specification and the applicable international standards before it leaves the factory.
| Packaging | |
|---|---|
| Bulk | Open-top trucks or half-height containers |
| Bulk bags | UV-resistant polypropylene with lifting straps |
| Drums | Recycled drums on wooden pallets |
Frequently asked questions
What size forged balls do you supply?
25 to 150 mm.
What hardness?
57–65 HRC surface hardness, set for the application.
Can you match our current specification?
Yes, and we can also review whether that specification is the right one for your mill.
How is performance measured?
Typically by wear rate, breakage, throughput, P80 and media cost per tonne, through marked-ball tests or controlled trials.
